We are seeking an Indigenous student researcher to contribute to a new project for the Sustainability in the Digital Age (SDA) initiative, and the Future Earth Canada Hub. The project focuses on conducting a landscape analysis of carbon and water modelling to inform the scale-up of nature-based climate solutions in Canada. The mandate of this project is to address key questions in this space, refined in collaboration with an expert advisory group, through research and a rapid consultation process. A final report in the format of a roadmap will be produced by the end of 2021. This roadmap can be used to prioritize research and investment towards the most promising avenues for scale-up of machine learning applications in Canada and present a more inclusive and representative view of nature-based climate solutions. Through this work, we will also support a project led by an Indigenous-led non profit on nature-based climate solutions in Canada.
This position is suited to Indigenous scholars either late in their Bachelor’s degree or working towards a Master’s degree who are able to lead research on the potential and limitations of market-based climate solutions and nature-based climate solutions both within Canada and internationally. With this research, we aim to promote Indigenous perspectives and findings from Indigenous science. This position reports to the project’s Principal Investigator Dr. Eliane Ubalijoro, Research Professor in the Department of Geography, Planning and Environment at Concordia University.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Conduct literature review, case study analysis, and other research as needed, under the guidance of the Principal Investigator
- Coordinate with parallel projects addressing similar questions, both within and external to SDA / Future Earth
- Support workshop organization and other stakeholder engagement activities
- Prepare materials related to the project as required, such as presentation slides, concept notes, synthesis documents
Qualifications & Desired Qualities
- Indigenous student (First Nations, Métis, and/or Inuit) in final year of Bachelor’s degree or Master’s degree, in a field related to sustainability (e.g., environmental governance, systems science), and/or digital technology (e.g., computer science and engineering, remote sensing, Artificial Intelligence)
- Experience in conducting literature reviews and case study analyses across different knowledge systems
- Interest in understanding and communicating major issues at the nexus of Indigenous science, digital innovation, and environmental sustainability
- Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills with ability to multitask
- Excellent writing and synthesis skills in English, bilingual French and English preferred
- Ability to be autonomous in a fast-paced work environment
As the position is based in Montreal, applicants must be legally authorized to work in Quebec. The position will be part of Concordia’s University’s CARE union (Concordia Association of Research Employees).
