Nature-based Solutions is an umbrella concept that encompasses actions to address biodiversity loss, climate change, water supply and other societal challenges. These actions include conservation (e.g., declaring a Protected Area) and restoration (e.g., reforestation). Currently, most research focuses on identifying optimal areas either for conservation or restoration, or addressing specific societal challenges.

This article proposes an integrated framework with unified criteria to identify optimal areas for conservation and restoration that address multiple societal challenges. Using Canada’s commitments on biodiversity as a case study, authors identified potential areas to conserve 30% of land and restore 30% of degraded land by 2030 and trained an AI agent to select optimal areas that simultaneously maximize multiple environmental outcomes.
