The SRI Congress is a week-long event where experts, researchers, scientists, policy-makers, businesses and the global community bring forth solutions and innovations to achieve knowledge-based sustainable transformation. The 2024 edition is a collaboration between the Sustainability Research and Innovation Congress (SRI), and Finland’s Sustainability Science Days (SSD) who share a mission to strengthen collaborative efforts for change.

Our team will be participating in two hybrid sessions this year:

1. Novel collaborations on the road to Innovate4Cities 2024. Date: 10 June 2024, 4:00 AM – 5:30 AM EDT (11:00 AM – 12:30 PM EEST)

More than half the world’s population resides in cities, and the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs projects that up to two-thirds will live in urban areas by 2050 (UN DESA, 2018). Given their central role in economic and social activities around the world, rapidly growing cities are both responsible for a large share of greenhouse gas emissions globally and also highly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change (IPCC AR6 WG2, Chapter 6, 2022). Recognizing the incredible potential of cities and their inhabitants to contribute to climate solutions, there have been significant advances in developing innovative tools and approaches to leverage science, data, and technology in support of sustainable, climate-friendly, and inclusive decision-making in cities. Innovate4Cities is a key global gathering of city leaders, scientists, researchers, innovators, academics, youth, and businesses supporting these endeavours, focusing on solutions that deliver locally and contribute globally. This session will bring together a variety of thought leaders to present pilot projects and to initiate collaborations in the lead-up to Innovate4Cities 2024, launching a community of practice around urban living labs and exploring opportunities to set up funded activities later in the year.

2. Education for Digital Sustainability. Date: 11 June 2024, 8:45 AM – 10:45 AM EDT (3:45 PM – 5:45 PM EEST)

Digital innovations are rapidly shifting societal norms and can accelerate sustainable transformation. However, in the absence of well-informed governance systems, continuous digitalization may widen existing socio-economic inequalities, exacerbate environmental damages and increase greenhouse gas emissions. Applying the concept of digital sustainability —defined as the design, development, use, and governance of safe and inclusive digital tools for sustainable development— will be critical to mitigate risks to the environmental and socio-economic systems in an increasingly machine-enabled future. Literacy and awareness on digital sustainability across key sectors must be increased to retrain workforces in many fields and ensure that all stakeholders, including decision makers, are well equipped to navigate and govern the intersection between digital technologies and sustainable development. We propose a multi-stakeholder workshop to build collective intelligence and contribute to global dialogues advancing literacy for digital sustainability. The workshop will be open to all SRI participants and will convene geographically diverse stakeholders, and from different disciplines such as technology and innovation, sustainability research, education, health, and policy. The workshop will discuss the urgency, barriers and opportunities for education at the intersection of digitalization and sustainability. This includes exploring interventions or actions that decision makers can implement to equip key stakeholders and sectors with the capacity to achieve digital sustainability. Insights collected will contribute to global dialogues on literacy for digital sustainability, in particular to on-going work under the Coalition for Digital Environmental Sustainability (CODES)’s Initiative on Education for Digital Sustainable Development. Workshop findings will be incorporated into a publication under this Impact Initiative, to be released in the lead up to the 2024 UN Summit of the Future. The report will present expert perspectives, recommendations and strategic interventions to advance digital sustainability education programs and support policy making in sustainability, education and digitalization.
